Our lead tester, Meg Carney, is no stranger to the importance of rain boots. She spent years working in muddy Midwestern outdoor conditions. They are specifically designed to withstand the rigors of the marine environment and provide a 6-inch ankle height.

Even walking along rocky shorelines and uneven winter terrain, the thick, cushioning insole offers noticeable shock resistance. Like many rain boots, these are not breathable, but the built-in anti-odor lining helps keep the shoes free from funky smells. We prefer to put these boots on a boot dryer after wearing them all day to further prevent any odors from arising. As mentioned, our feet get warm in these boots, and wearing them on a hot summer day isn't very comfortable. We prefer these for shoulder seasons and winter.

Over the last two years, we've worn the Grundéns Deck Boots nearly every day for winter and spring activities, and they're still going strong. The materials have unnoticeable wear, and the ankle height makes them easy to pair with various outfits and activities.

The only downside to the ankle height is that they're not great for wading or deep water/mud. Compared to other ankle boots, like the Asgard Ankle Rain Boots, we prefer the wide fit and added support of the Grundéns. It makes them feel more like running shoes than clunky rubber boots.

Although the tread doesn't look like it, the razor-siped outsoles have stellar traction. We can walk across slippery docks, muddy streets, and rocky trails while feeling stable. We've had a slip or two, but these were on smooth surfaces like a mossy, wet tennis court. As long as the surfaces have some texture, these boots give some solid footing.

We have also worn these boots for winter hikes by pairing them with micro-spikes or snowshoes. Paired with thick socks, they provide enough warmth and moisture protection to keep feet comfortable and dry all day.

These boots will continue to perform season after season with proper care, including wiping down with a damp cloth and air drying naturally.
