Western Turkey Hunts:  Why They are so Much Fun

A Western turkey hunt offers many of the thrills of stalking big game out West but with much greater license certainty and less expense.  An elk and deer tag can cost $1500 while turkey tags are around $100 and often you get a chance for two birds.

Spot and Stalk Toms

Mule deer are exciting to hunt because you must often cover lots of ground while glassing extensively.  Western turkey hunters use the same tactics to score because Rio’s and Merriam’s often travel miles in a given day searching for food on the open prairie.  It’s common to spot turkey feeding or strutting a mile or more away.  Once located, the hunt gets very exciting as you close the distance and try to lure them into bow range.

Roost Trees

Whereas Eastern turkeys roost in various locations, Western birds often spend the night in the same tree which allows hunters to quickly locate them.  Additionally, birds out West almost always gobble as daylight approaches making them easier to find.  Turkeys will consistently use a roost tree until they are hunted so wise archers allow birds to fly down and then anticipate a route to intercept them as they go about their daily routine.

Hunt/Cation

Western turkey hunts can be a great way to combine a family vacation with a hunting trip.  Texas offers great hunting trips and has tons of attractions that ladies and families will love.  South Dakota is a personal favorite with great natural attractions and lots of turkeys.  Colorado is a chance to see the Rockies in spring and challenge a white-tipped Merriam’s among mountain splendor.

Nebraska’s Early Archery-Only Season

It’s too late for this year’s season, but not to plan for next spring.  Nebraska offers a two-week archery-only season prior to the shotgun opener and it’s lots of fun because you will have little competition.  This may well coincide with spring break so that a short hunt can be done without youngsters missing school and flights to the Mid-West are very reasonable at this time of year. Western turkeys quickly becomes addictive because they are so much fun. Start your 2026 trip here: https://www.eregulations.com/nebraska/hunting/turkey-regulations
