Fine Tuning Water Hole Tactics for Deer

Whitetail deer receive much of their needed hydration from the plants they eat.  However, as droughts occur in July and August, deer will seek out natural water sources, such as ponds, streams, and creeks.  Before this dry period occurs, it’s a great time to install a small water hole that will attract deer, often in daylight hours.  Many states have regulations against baiting for ethical and disease prevention, yet water sources don’t have the negative impact of a cattle pond.  If your favorite hunting property has a cattle pond, you may be doing the deer a favor by constructing a water source where deer can drink while on solid ground.

Success Factors

Locating your water hole between food sources and bedding is the ideal set-up because deer are likely to access it during daylight hours.  Bucks may wait until dark to enter a field, yet they will be on the move as darkness approaches and may stop for a drink.  Location should also be in cover so that deer don’t have to step into a vast open space to drink.  Additionally, you may need to replenish the water once a week, so ensure you can keep the tank filled by vehicle or establish a waterline from a remote road access point.

Muddy Doesn’t Matter

Deer frequently drink from muddy puddles, so don’t think that your water hole needs to look like a swimming pool.  Some folks like to line the bottom of the water hole with mud and leaves to give the water a more natural taste.  You will also need a critter stick, a small branch that will prevent small rodents from drowning in the water and contaminating it.
