Adair County mourns loss of student after deadly DUI crash

ADAIR COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – The Adair County Public School District is mourning the loss of a young student following a tragic DUI crash over the weekend.

In a social media post, school officials confirmed that second-grade student Rose Morgan was killed in the crash, and two other students were injured.

According to Kentucky State Police, the crash occurred Saturday on the Kentucky 55 Bypass. Investigators say the driver of a pickup truck rear-ended the SUV carrying the children, causing it to veer off the road and overturn.

State Police reported that the 62-year-old driver of the SUV and another passenger were also injured in the crash.

Authorities have charged the driver of the pickup truck, 46-year-old Joel Hammack, with DUI and vehicular homicide. Hammack’s passenger, 45-year-old Walter Nichols, is facing charges of assault and terroristic threatening for allegedly being unruly following the incident.

The school district has expressed its condolences and is offering support to students and staff affected by this tragedy.
