Catholic Action Center looks to increase safety on Winchester Rd.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — The Catholic Action Center is voicing concerns about pedestrian and driver safety along Winchester Road after the recent death of a pedestrian familiar to the organization.

Earlier this week, 43-year-old Angelina Wells was struck and killed by a car while walking on Winchester Road. Ginny Ramsey, the director of the Catholic Action Center, said Wells had been known to the center for several years.

“Angelina was someone that we’ve known for several years, and at times she was here at the center,” Ramsey said. “It’s just sad. I know that she had a daughter, she had family, she had friends here. So we just pray for her and her family, but we as a community need to do something about the safety issues.”

The center has been advocating for improved safety measures since it relocated to its current site off Winchester Road in 2017. Ramsey noted that the road has a dangerous reputation, with frequent pedestrian accidents.

“People are hit out there all the time; they’re just not killed,” Ramsey said. “There are some places on Winchester Road where folks come over the hill, and it’s a fast-moving road. It’s gotten even worse since we’ve got the school.”

Ramsey suggested potential solutions such as adding a pedestrian overpass or reducing the speed limit to prioritize safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
