AllOutdoor Review – 5.11 Tactical V.XI Sigurd Shirt

Founded in 2003, 5.11 Tactical emerged as a brand dedicated to providing purpose-driven gear for law enforcement, military professionals, and outdoor enthusiasts. The company's name originates from the highest level of difficulty in rock climbing, symbolizing the challenging nature of the professions its products cater to. Initially recognized for their durable and functional pants featuring a unique strap and slash pocket design, 5.11 quickly expanded its product line to encompass a comprehensive range of tactical apparel, footwear, and accessories. Over the years, 5.11 Tactical has become synonymous with high-performance gear that does not break the bank. Today, I will be going over something from the V.XI collection, the Sigurd Shirt.

5.11 Tactical Coverage on AllOutdoor

The 5.11 Sigurd Shirt was provided by 5.11 for this review and while I am allowed to keep the product indefinitely, this will not change my opinion on this product or any of 5.11's current or past offerings. I have been wearing the Sigurd Shirt for the past 9 months on trips to the range, Rucks around town, and at home on the weekends as it’s pretty comfy on hot days in Alabama and Maine.

AllOutdoor Review - 5.11 Tactical V.XI Sigurd Shirt

5.11 Tactical V.XI Sigurd Shirt

As an avid outdoor shooter in Alabama, I've endured my fair share of blistering summer days at the range, where the humidity clings like a second skin and the sun feels like it's personally challenging you to stay upright. Finding a shirt that can handle this heat while keeping me comfortable and functional is no small feat. Enter the 5.11 V.XI™ Sigurd Shirt, a piece of tactical apparel that's become my go-to for hot-day range sessions.

Breathability

Made from a 78% nylon and 22% elastane warp knit mesh with 5.11's Cryo-Tac™ technology, it's designed to keep you cool, and it delivers. The fabric feels cool to the touch, almost like a subtle promise that it's got your back against Alabama's oppressive heat. On a recent 95°F day with humidity pushing 80%, I headed to my local range for a late afternoon pistol and rifle drills. The Sigurd's moisture-wicking properties kicked in almost immediately. As sweat started to build during rapid-fire sequences, the shirt pulled it away from my skin, keeping me drier than I'd expected. Unlike cotton tees that turn into soggy messes, this shirt stayed breathable, letting air flow through its stretch knit mesh to evaporate sweat quickly.

Ergonomics

The ergonomic, athletic fit is another win. It's snug without being constrictive, hugging my frame just enough to feel secure during dynamic movements like drawing from a holster or transitioning between targets. The flat-lock seams to prevented any chafing, even when I was sweating buckets and wearing a plate carrier. I wore it standalone, as 5.11 suggests it can be used, and it never felt heavy or clingy, which is a common issue with other tactical shirts in this climate.

One downside I encountered was tucking the shirt into my pants. The nylon-elastane blend is slick, and the shorter length meant it occasionally slipped out during aggressive movements. For range days, this wasn't a dealbreaker, but it's something to note if you need a consistently tucked-in look.  After hours in the Alabama heat, I expected the usual post-range funk, but the Sigurd kept things under control, sparing my truck's interior from the typical post-workout stench.

Durability

Durability-wise, the shirt held up well, though it's not as rugged as heavier tactical gear. It brushed off dirt and minor scrapes from leaning against range barriers, but I'd be cautious around sharp edges, as the lightweight fabric could snag. For its intended purpose—breathable performance—it strikes a solid balance. The rugby-style collar and ID panels on the sleeves add a tactical look without sacrificing comfort, and the variety of colors (I went with ranger green) makes it versatile for both range and at-home use.

Wrap Up

Overall, the 5.11 V.XI Sigurd Shirt is a standout for hot days at the Alabama shooting range. Its Cryo-Tac™ technology and mesh construction make it a breathability champion, keeping me cool and dry when the heat tries to win. For shooters facing similar climates, it's a worthy investment for comfort and performance. Just don't expect it to stay perfectly tucked during high-speed drills.
