Kentucky State Police investigating officer-involved shooting in Lewis County

TOLLESBORO, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – Kentucky State Police (KSP) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Lewis County that left one man dead and a sheriff’s deputy injured.

According to a release from KSP, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) requested the agency’s Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) to investigate the shooting, which happened late Tuesday night near Tollesboro.

Deputies and Vanceburg Police officers responded to a domestic violence call on Little Cabin Creek, where a man had reportedly been firing a gun. When they got there, officers encountered 49-year-old Keith Truesdell of Vanceburg, who was armed.

KSP’s preliminary findings indicate Truesdell fired a weapon at law enforcement, hitting an LCSO deputy. Officers returned fire, striking Truesdell. He was taken to the University of Kentucky Hospital, where he later died from his injuries, according to KSP.

The injured deputy was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released. No other injuries were reported.

KSP emphasized that the information remains preliminary and subject to change as investigators continue gathering evidence and speaking with witnesses.
