Amazon workers go on strike ahead of holidays

LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) – The holidays are less than a week away and workers at Amazon declared a strike on Thursday.

Across the nation, thousands of Amazon workers are on strike at major warehouses in New York, Atlanta, San Francisco, and outside Los Angeles and Chicago–even here in Lexington. We saw some outside the amazon warehouse Thursday morning.

Teamsters Union says this is the largest strike against the company in U.S. history.

According to Teamsters, the union represents nearly 10 thousand workers who are fighting for higher wages, better benefits and safer working conditions.

However, Amazon says it does not expect any impact on operations.

In a statement, Amazon says, “For more than a year now, the teamsters have continued to intentionally mislead the public – claiming that they represent ‘thousands of amazon employees and drivers’. ”

Adding, “The truth is that the teamsters have actively threatened, intimidated, and attempted to coerce amazon employees and third-party drivers to join them, which is illegal…”

Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien says, “If your package is delayed during the holidays, you can blame Amazon’s insatiable greed. We gave Amazon a clear deadline to come to the table and do right by our members. They ignored it.”

Amazon says Teamsters was not able to get enough support from employees so most people who are seen on strike are not workers.

Amazon adds they appreciate their team’s great work and are focusing on getting customers their holiday orders.
