Rising demand: local restaurant addresses food insecurity

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — Locals Food Hub and Pizza Pub combines a food distribution center, a SNAP grocery store, and a restaurant. Each week, they provide boxes of food donations to the community, highlighting the importance of supporting local farmers.

“We distribute over 240 boxes a week, every week they go to different organizations but then we keep 40 of those here at our Frankfort location, and distribute those to our Frankfort community,” said Corey Tincher of Locals Food Hub and Pizza Pub.

The food is entirely sourced from local farmers across Kentucky, ensuring it’s fresh and nutritious.

“What makes the most of our food and what we distribute is that it is nutrient dense,” Tincher added. “We’re very intentional about the people that we purchase from, and so that need is fulfilled a little bit more,” said Tincher.

The hub reports growing demand for food donations amid rising costs and economic challenges.

“You know there’s definitely especially specific products, there’s been an inflation within the past year,” said Tincher. “Just the environment that we’re in, the economy, that more so now than ever there’s a need for food period,” said Tincher.

Locals Food Hub and Pizza Pub distributes grocery boxes every Friday. Some weeks, the need is so great that they can’t meet the demand, but they make an effort to accommodate those turned away.

“There has been a huge amount of people that we’ve had to not necessarily turn away but tell them, ‘next week, you will be first in line, to receive one of these boxes, we’re very sorry,'” Tincher said.

The next giveaway is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at their Wilkinson Blvd. location in Frankfort, with all community members welcome.
