LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — The Bellinger family was traveling from Virginia for a weekend with family here in Lexington when they were in a car crash.

They say it happened on October 19th on KY 627 late at night. Their friends Dylan and Shyloe Marker received the terrible news not long after.

“I jumped out of bed and I was crying and he asked me what was wrong and all I could say was just ‘the kids’,” Shyloe said.

10-year-old Autumn and eight-year-old Damon were in their parents’ car when another driver crossed the double yellow line, hitting the family’s car head-on. Autumn received the worst of the injuries. Shyloe says it was a miracle the accident happened so close to medical care, since autumn suffered life-threatening injuries to her neck and lungs.

“By the grace of God did this all happen just ten minutes from the children’s hospital where they’ve been these last few weeks,” she said.

Meanwhile, Damon had to have both a kidney and his spleen removed.

Autumn and Damon’s parents, Amber Anna and Jacob, are both dealing with their own injuries while taking care of their children in the hospital.

“You just push through and do whatever you can for your kids,” Shyloe said.

Right now, Autumn still has a long way to go in terms of recover.

“They just currently put in a stomach tube for her because she can’t pass the swallow test. She can’t swallow water,” Dylan said.

Damon seems to be making a quicker recovery.

“Damon is doing well, we’re seeing his personality come out more which is such a relief,” Shyloe said.

The Virginia family will have to stay here in Lexington for the time being. Both parents stopped working and are staying with their kids at the hospital full time.

“Can’t ever prepare for anything like this either, they definitely need all the help they can get,” Dylan said.
