Study finds high fat cheese may reduce dementia risk

(ABC36 NEWS NOW) – A new study suggests that consuming high-fat cheese and cream may help lower the risk of developing dementia, though experts urge caution in interpreting the findings.

Researchers followed nearly 28,000 Swedes for up to 25 years. They found that participants who ate at least two ounces of high-fat cheese daily had a 13 percent lower risk of developing dementia compared to those who consumed less than half an ounce.

The study did not find any dementia-related benefits from butter, milk, or low-fat dairy products.

However, experts not involved in the research note significant limitations. The study captured participants’ dietary habits only at the start and did not follow up with most participants over the course of the study, which could affect the reliability of the results.

While the findings are intriguing, researchers caution that more long-term studies are needed to confirm any protective effects of high-fat dairy on cognitive health.
