Building an Off-Grid Cabin for the Next Generation

Here on the homestead, everything we do is about more than just food, livestock, or resilience. It’s about building a legacy that lasts for generations. Watch as we build this off-grid cabin to continue the legacy here at Riverbend.

A wall of a cabin being lifted into place.

When our daughter and her new husband asked if they could build a life here on the property, close to family and the land, we were honored. Of course, the timing was tight. We had just three months until the wedding, but when has that ever stopped us?

With evenings and weekends, a lot of determination, and help from the whole family, we built a 16x32 off-grid cabin in just 67 days. This cozy 500-square-foot home includes a small kitchen and living area, a bedroom, a bathroom, and a loft for extra space.

An off-grid cabin in the woods.

It’s heated by a wood stove and powered by a generator, with plans to add solar in the future. The cabin also features a rainwater catchment system with over 600 gallons of storage, making it completely independent from the grid.

A small woodstove inside a cabin.

What began as a practical project turned into something far deeper, a physical expression of our family vision. It’s about creating space for our children to grow their own families, to work hard, and to live close to the land and to each other.

If you’ve ever dreamed of providing a place for your kids to come home to, or wondered what it takes to build off-grid, we invite you to watch this cabin tour and follow along with us as we continue finishing the inside through the winter.

A family in the garden celebrating.
